Show home is unusual event

Show home is unusual event

Little has changed in the village of Freshford, near Bath since it was depicted as the quintessential English village in a blockbusting movie in the 1950s, so the opening of a newly built show home this week is a rare event.

Few new homes are possible in Freshford as it sits at the southernmost tip of the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Beauty and within a conservation area and was voted among the most desirable communities in England.

It is the first chance for people to see inside an exclusive development of the former Freshford Mill, which has a history dating back to the Domesday Book.

Freshford was the village of Titfield in the 1953 British comedy The Titfield Thunderbolt, about villagers battling to save their railway service – and it still boasts a train station today from which people can commute into Bath, Bristol or London.

For centuries the mill alongside the river was a centre for the clothing industry, but in the 20th century it served as a storage base for aircraft parts in the Second World War and after the war became a rubber works where tennis balls, among other goods, were manufactured.

Extensive work has been carried out to convert the former industrial land to an environment for quality living and Rackham Court is a terrace of three-bedroom townhouses, each with unique features, that overlook a newly created pond and natural woodland.

Francine Watson, New Homes Associate at Knight Frank, said: “The opening of the Rackham Court show home is the first opportunity that people will have to take a look at these stunning three-bedroom homes.

“As they are low-maintenance, these units would be perfect for small families and downsizes, or for those seeking a second home near Bath. Freshford, which sits within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a highly sought-after location, and we are confident these beautifully designed and excellently finished homes will be extremely popular.”

The first phase being completed is all new build with prices ranging from £680,000 for a three-bedroom townhouse in Rackham Court to £1.7 million for Perkins Court, a stunning six-bedroom family home.

Ben Lovell from real estate advisor, Avison Young, who is overseeing the completion of the development, said: “In truth the mill, as an industrial site, has been an eyesore at times in its history and a lot of work has had to go on to get things to the stage where a fantastic environment has been created in the wooded valley alongside the river.

“This first phase features newly-built properties and further stages will include converting the former mill buildings into unique places for people to live. The village has fantastic facilities, including an award-winning shop, a notable 16th Century village inn gastropub as well as being in a great location as it is close to Bath, the motorway network and has a railway station.”

The Rackham show home can be seen by appointment by calling agents Knight Frank on 01225 325999 and further details can be found at www.freshfordmill.com.
