A MORTGAGE broker gambled his own house to set up business – and is now celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Marcus Robinson, 45, took the bold move to re-mortgage his house – despite not having any clients - to create Mortgage Style, which has offices in Portbury and Bristol.

Marcus, from Leigh Woods, worked long hours in his spare room and earned just a few thousand in his first year.

But today he has taken on staff and his turnover has increased over 2,000 per cent – with further expansion on the cards.

Marcus, an award winning adviser who has worked with multinational firms, said: “It was a gamble and I risked losing the house if the business didn’t succeed.

“I remember not earning anything in the first four months and it was scary at times. The first year’s earnings were a fraction of what I would have earned in employment - while working double the hours.

“But I was confident in my own ability and was prepared to put in the hours. The risk and hard work paid off.”

Marcus, who previously worked in financial services, re-mortgaged his house to gain enough capital to cover his living and business expenses in the start-up phase.

Marcus, who offers mortgages for any scenario but specialises in difficult to place mortgages, wanted to build a business offering greater choice to customers.

He said: “I wanted to cut out some of the red tape and have more flexibility to help people looking for a mortgage.

“I feel a great sense of satisfaction when people, who previously thought their options were limited, leave knowing that buying their dream home is within sight.

“I also enjoy being my own boss and the variety of the work. One day I could be dealing with a first time buyer, the next with a multi-million pound property owner.”

The former UWE student is no stranger to hard work as he studied for financial and mortgage qualifications while working full time as a sports coach and manager.

But his ambition was put to the test during the recession.

Marcus said: “It was a difficult time and it wiped out around three years of progress. We learned to diversify and slowly business began to recover.”

Today the firm, which has its headquarters in The Sheepway and an office in Park Street, Bristol, is looking to take on more staff.

Marcus said: “I have no regrets, even when times were really tough. It’s an exciting time now and we hope to become one of the best known firms in our industry in the South-West.”
